I was recently contacted by a friend of mine. They saw a PSA on sexual abuse I made for one of my classes. He couldn’t believe that 20% of children are sexually abused before the age of eight. He wasn’t questioning my statistics as much as he could not wrap his head around the thought of someone finding a child sexually attractive. It made me wonder, is this why we keep turning a blind eye? Is this why we, as a society, are seemingly ok with the sexualization of our children?
For instance, how many of you have heard or even watched the reality television show Toddlers and Tiaras?
What happened to little girls just being little girls? These children wear more make-up than I did back in the 1980s! Yet we, as a society, are encouraging this by putting these shows on television instead of working toward making these pageants about CHILDREN, not sexualized little girls.
We continue the sexualization of our young girls by normalizing the “school girl” fantasy. And have you seen the halloween costumes for our young girls?
We are setting our young girls up to be victims of sexual abuse every singe day by normalizing the sexualization of young girls. It must stop.
We need to protect our girls (and boys), not sexualize them. We need to let them be kids and not put them in harms way. We need to make it clear that sexualizing our children is NOT to be tolerated. Our children deserve our protection not our commercialization.
Those pedophiles and abusers need more than a slap on the wrist. We have pot smokers doing life, while pedophiles roam free on the streets – free to victimize untold number of children. We need toucher laws, longer sentences for perpetrators. We need to costume and clothing industry to become more responsible about the types of costumes and clothing they are selling to young people.
We all need to step up and force the changes that need to be made in order to keep our children safe.
